I must admit I was dubious about Bali, I have heard such mixed reviews but as it doesn’t seem right to go to Indonesia again without at least giving it a try…..

Balian our first Bali home was on the west coast, famous for surf and but also a little of the beaten track. The village had a chilled out atmosphere you would expect of a place known for its surfing. The beach had dark sands, not what you expect of a tropical beach but stunning in its own way. The beach was strewn in drift wood and coconut shells and unfortunately as common with many of the worlds beaches plastic. There wasn’t loads but a nevertheless a visual reminder of our need as humans to reduce our dependency on single use plastic.

The grandparents first full day was spent showing and rebuilding/extending the structures the boys built the day before. We spent most of the day on the beach or in the river mouth. Unfortunately the surf was to big, even the locals were not going out.

The second day we organised a tour in land and up to see a massive tree which spanned the road and next a waterfall. The waterfall was 900 hundred steps down, all of us had uncontrollable knee shakes at the bottom, which could only be stopped by a dip in the freezing water. I did question the wisdom of our of decent many times on the way back up again but thankfully all three generations made it back to the top.

The drive back down to the coast was spectacular with views of green sloping all the way down to the white water fringed coast.

Our last day in Balian was middle mans birthday celebration (1 day early due to travelling the next) and it was his choice on how to spend it! The day day started with chocolate pancakes at a very yummy cafe we had already frequented. Followed by a little archery as middle mans present was a bow and arrow set. (And no I’m not really sure in the wisdom of that present) And the rest of the day was spent again on the beach.

The surf looked manageable but after much internal conflict I am ashamed to say I chickend out 😬. Never the less we had a very enjoyable day doing not a great deal.

We had been told about a cave you could climb in to see bats, so that was middle mans choice for the evening. A very enjoyable walk around to the next bay was rewarded with a stunning beach called secret bay. There was cocktails, bat cave and a stunning sunset to end the day. I throughly enjoyed it and I think the now 7 year old did also!

Balian has been a great place to unwind and for my parents to get over the jet lag. So far Bali was doing ok… but now time for some culture and adventure, Ubud was calling!

  1. More wonderful pics. and a great description of Bali! Looks like you had a lovely time there. Saw your Mum and Dad yesterday, briefly, after their epic journey home. They had a rather fractious Rory with them, so not able to hear too much about the trip, but getting together later in the week when I will get to hear more about it. Safe journey back to your Shanghai home at the weekend. xxxxx
