What indicators mean…

Driving in Zambia has many challenges one is trying to work out what is meant by hazard lights and indicators. Below are lists of what we have found indicator lights could mean, list are in order of frequency use!

Hazard lights

  • Police check
  • I’m stopping but have no break lights
  • I’m parked in the middle of the road for no reason
  • There is a speed bump
  • I forgot to turn them off
  • My car is bust and barley moving
  • I’m having a nap in my vehicle which is parked in the middle of the road
  • I have broken down
  • There is an obstruction in the road, so far these have included
    • Herd of goats
    • Donkey
    • Pig wallowing in a pot hole
    • Giant bolder

Left Indicator

  • It is safe to over take
  • I have my hazards on but my right indicator is not working (see meaning of hazards above)
  • If right arm is waving out window then I am turning right but know my right indicator is not working
  • I forgot to turn it off
  • I’m turning left at some point

Right Indicator

  • Here is the side of my car dont hit it
  • It is not safe to overtake
  • I have my hazards on but my left indicator is not working (see meaning of hazards above)
  • I’m parked but might pull out at some point in the future, not necessary now… may be ten minutes.. maybe now
  • If I’m pointing left over the top of the car then I’m turning left but know my right indicator is not working
  • I’m turning right at some point
