What, did they just let you drive out without giving it to you?

Border crossing day!  Again I was feeling nervous and this time it turns out rightly so. 😦

We set of early and get to the Botswana side as it is opening. From this one point you can either enter Zambia, or Zimbabwe.  It was just a case of getting on the right boat! In fact it is the meeting of four countries boundaries.

We managed to leave Botswana with no trouble but my nerves were about entering Zambia. For those who are new to my blog there was a bit of an issue with Baby Blues visa… In that an application to add him to Husbands work permit was in progress! It had been in progress for a while. We had managed to leave with no visa problems (see blog on first crossing) but would entering be as easy?

We boarded the boat and left the organised chaos of Botswana behind. The soothing waters of the Zambezi were in stark contrast to the Zambian side. We disembarked to utter madness. Lorries, cars, people and buildings everywhere!  We had no idea where we needed to go. Husband decided to get out and investigate. He was gone hours… I occasionally glimpsed him going backwards and forwards between the buildings (some made out of old lorry containers).

Meanwhile the boys watched two whole movies while I tried to entertain baby blue in the stifling hot car. Every now and then I would brave opening the window to get some air. Even the slightest gap seemed to invite throngs of people selling their wares.

When I saw husband approaching via the rear view mirror I assumed it was time to go show our faces. But husband got in the car looking thoroughly pee’d off. “It is done… Well kind of”. It turns out Baby Blue now has a court summons… Great! The immigration officer apparently laughed when Husband had shown him the photo of the receipt we had been told was good enough to prove that his application was being processed.

Next hurdle was getting the car back into Zambia. Apparently we should have been given a temporary export letter when we left that we should now hand in to the guard on the gate. When we got to the gate sure enough the lady asked for said letter. When we explained we hadn’t got it she asked for proof of car ownership… With that in order she went back to the missing document. “What, did they just let you drive out without giving it to you?” she asked accusingly. “Yes” we replied honestly…  “Ok, have a nice day”… Shocked we drove out of the border crossing back into Zambia! Next stop Livingston and one from my bucket list… Victoria Falls.

  1. Not all a bed of roses, eh! Thanks for another fascinating blog.
Loved the Baby Globetrotters piece too! Thought you did a brilliant interview! Or have I already said that?! (Getting very forgetful in my old age!) xxx
