So today is the day… their first day on skis!
It started with dressing all the boys for winter… having no idea how cold it was gonna be I went a little crazy… it took almost 45mins to dress…
but less than 20mins later the boys were pulling it all off again in the ski rental shop because they were to hot!
Then another hour later all kited out we left the rental shop to walk back to our ski locker to leave about 3 layers each! Finally ready… and glad we booked an afternoon lesson we headed to the nursery slope.
I have skied but over 10 years ago and had no idea how to start the boys off… and there was no way they would wait the 30mins till our lesson… so after a few attempts sliding with one ski on they headed for the carpet lift with two skis on… at the top I was trying to work out what to say when middle man just says “it’s ok, you do this” and off he went sliding all the way to the bottom?!?
That boy is fearless and way to capable for his own good! His younger brother of course just went and followed him… only just stopping in time at the bottom.
Which left just Lego boy and the husband looking at me eagerly awaiting some advice. A quick (and pretty useless) explanation of the snow plough off they went. Lego boys snow plough was so effective he slid down the small slope at a snails pace. The husband also made it down in one piece.

A few more slides down each and thankfully it was time to meet our teacher. Middle man introduced himself as the best skier in the family 😀. He introduced the much more child friendly french fries and pizza terms for the ski positions and pretty soon all the boys could follow Tyler (our teacher) down the small slope. Lego man confidence came on at an incredible rate… and Tyler even managed to tame middle mans enthusiasm for speed by getting him to turn under control.

The husband face was set with concentration as he made run after run down down the slope. As I caught him up at the bottom, in the queue for the carpet lift his face broke into a smile and he announced he was loving it 😅… phew.
After just over an hour boy blue started to get tired but a quick warm milk and packet of skittles from Starbucks (unexpected jackpot) got him to return to lesson in time to master his turns also. Although I have wanted to do a ski holiday for years tbh honest I’m not sure it would have been possible with boy blue any younger! He tired much quicker than the other two… and needed much more support… but making sure he could have a break every two hours so seemed to be the trick.

I was was keen to get on a chairlift but didn’t push it because I knew the foundations needed to be in place first so instead I spent the first day enjoying watching them all improve so much. (And practicing my very rusty turns).
Initially we had intended for tomorrow (Christmas day) to be a self ski day… but after today’s success we swapped a lesson we had booked for later in the week to Christmas Day!
Christmas Eve was a pleasant afare of eating way to much food, watching the ski patrol put on a light show followed by a relax in the hotels massive hot tub!
Great to get those two blogs, Annie! Have followed your adventures in the snow avidly – am so pleased that it all worked out so wonderfully well. Amazing that they all took to it so well! ( although no surprise that Mally did.) We had a wonderful Christmas in Bristol. It was great that Natasha was back – she did most of the cooking! ( sending you a pic. of her incredible Christmas cake) Are you back in Shanghai now? Was the body- clock disruption as bad in reverse – or worse?! Happy New Year to you all! ❤️xxxxx
