Are they here?

Can we stay up? … no it’s to late sorry… Will you wake us? … maybe we will see…. Can we sleep in their room so they are there when we wake… no sorry I think they will be tired, you guys wiggle so much!

And so the discussion went on and off for most of the day. Why? Because The grandparents arrive that night. Problem is it’s after bed time when they land and then there is always the time it takes to clear imagination and luggage claim. We agree to see if the plane is on time before we make a decision.

Once back in WiFi that evening turns out the whole argument was probably pointless. I received a message from my mother saying it was unlikely they would make there connection in Bangkok due to an issue with the plane.

Later Husband settled the boys to sleep with a promise to wake them if the grandparents made it! They are super excited of course. But It turns out that my parents did miss their connection and the next flight was first thing tomorrow. So we all had to wait a little longer.

When the boys woke their first question of course was “are they here?” No … But they only had to wait a couple of hours. Me and Lego Boy headed to the airport by tut tut. Lego boy had made a sign and everything! As we pulled into the airport Lego Boy saw Pom Pom (grandad) wandering around. Much to the surprise of me and the driver Lego Boy jumped out the moving tut tut and ran to give his Pom Pom a massive hug. After emotional hugs all round the 4 of us and the luggage piled into the tut tut back to the hotel.

Hello!

Its relatively recently since we saw my parents as we saw them at Christmas in the Philippines. (Missing blogs yet to write 🤦‍♀️)

As soon as we walked through the hotel door there was a blur of Middle Man running at full speed to launch himself at my dad. I’m actually surprised they didn’t both go flying. Baby blue was clearly interested but not so bold as his big brother, his hellos coming shyly from behind the husbands leg.

We skype both sets of grandparents regularly but for Baby Blue proportional to his age the last time he saw them must seem agers.

It still amazes me how easy it is to meet up with people at random places around the world. Back when we were backpackers it could be weeks between emails, Internet cafes were dial up, slow and few and far between. We didn’t even carry mobiles! It would take months to organise meet ups on travels and even then it was a bit of a guessing game of the location was not familiar to either party. I have strong memories of wandering Sydney for hours trying to meet some mates. But now as long as you both have WiFi it couldn’t be easier. Even with complications of missed connections 😄

Anyway I digress, now with my parents here it was time to do some serious temple-ing. First on the list was the “tomb raider” temple where Angelinena jolie fell through the floor in the original film. Famed for its massive trees growing on the temple ruins.

Officially know as Ta Prohm was probably one of my favourite temples. There was something poetic about seeing how nature reclaims and takes back. It somehow adds to the beauty of human built temples. No matter how amazing, grand, beautiful, specatular humans can make things nature always seems to go one better.

All but the biggest trees have been cleared from the ruins but it gives you an incleling into what the temples must have been like when they were first rediscovered. I know the boys enjoyed exploring and pretending they were great adventures.

That afternoon we also visited Banteay Kdei, a maze of small rooms along and off an mind blowingly long corridor, and Sra Srang the royal bathing pond.

We ended the day with a sneak peak at Angkor Wat (literally 5 mins). As you cross the moat you can only see the gate which alone are seriously impressive. Our first views of Angkot Wat were just as, if not more impressive than I had expected. The scale, the detail, the slightly crazy showman ship, the craftsmanship and its setting in nature all combine a totally awesome view. I wish I could describe it better but to be honest I don’t think any words or photos can do it justice.

I turned to give my parents a hug and obviously my dad was just as taken aback as he was almost in tears!

We wander back over the bridge and finish the day eating fresh pineapple watching the sunset over its moat. Not a bad finish to a great day!
