Girl

Soon we will be heading over the border back into Zambia but first for a couple of days around Chobe national park. Its famous for it elephants.

And it did not disappoint! For the last fifty kilometers of our journey we kept having to stop to let elephants cross the road.  Massive herds of all shapes and sizes. There saggy grey skin rippling as they took their thundering foot steps. I stopped counting at eighty-something as we were still miles from the campsite. It was a enjoyable journey with the boys shouting up every time they spotted them.

By the time we reached the campsite it was the heat of the day and we were all hungry!  Not fancying more baked and beans we put up the tent, (OK if I’m honest I sat in a grump whilst Husband put up the tent) and headed to Kasane for lunch and shopping.

Still feeling grumpy and hungry we pulled into the Old House, the car park was rather full so we had to park at a funny angle but we were not blocking anyone in. A lady took offence to our wonky parking… ‘you shouldn’t park like that girl!’… Despite not been in the best of moods I held my tongue and smiled back whilst unloading my boys. After she had gone Husband pipes up ‘girl? Is that meant to be an insult?’ he proceeded to spend the entire day calling me “girl” much to his own amusement. Despite the rude welcome we enjoyed a pleasant lunch. Mood greatly improved after the chocolate brownie for pudding.

Shopping done we headed back to the campsite passing yet more elephants. The campsite had a cool bar less than ten meters from a waterhole where elephants would stop to drink. Unfortunately our drinks were expensive so we returned to the tent for an early night. All night long we heard the trumpeting of elephants as they passed around our campsite. Thankfully the bramble hedges stopped them trampling out tent.

Chobe National Park was as beautiful as the elephants that roamed it. It was full of life. As well as elephants we saw warthog (with babies), impala, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe and numerous birds.

Towards the end of our drive we turned a corner to be greeted by an amazing vista over looking the banks of the river Chobe. There must have been over a hundred elephants enjoying the rivers banks. They were drinking, grazing, flinging mud, and swimming. I could have stayed there for hours watching…. But a few minutes later Lego Boy pipes up… “I’m board of elephants”! Having seen literally hundreds in the last forty eight hours the uniqueness of this situation was lost to him. One day I will remind him!

  2. Love reading about every adventure you make, i imagine you have to pinch yourselves sometimes believing this is where you are and seeing all you do, its certainly a lifetime experience, makes Derbyshire seem very dull.
