I am 6!

Windhoek is not like any Afican capital I have been to before! It was clean, organised, calm and quite! There was no crazy traffic, mad roads, beggars, crowds of people or piles of rubbish?? It was a pleasant few days chilling out at Urban Camp and shopping.

Number one on the boys list was seeing the new star wars movie so on the first evening we make our way to the other side of town to a cinema. It took only 15mins to cross town, I had given us a hour expecting crazy roads… so we arrived 1 hour before the movie started.

At the cinema desk (with no que) I asked what time the next showing was whilst Lego Boy hopped and jumped around next to me with excitement. “Its a 19:00 but children are not allowed”. What! Its a PG 13 so the cinema was not accepting anyone under 13! Lego Man was crushed, he didn’t cry or shout or tantrum…. he just sat on the floor staring at the walls. Husband looked like he was about to cry. The boys had been looking forward to it for weeks, all journey they had been pretending the beast was the milenium falcon (well it has enough broken parts and husband roars like that hairy chew thing every time he fixes it!) and now it looked like they couldn’t go see it!

Middle Man pipes up… “I am hungry” obviously not as gutted as the other two. So I take two sulking boys, Middle Man and Baby Blue to a pizza place opposite the cinema. Now a good pizza was something I was looking forward to! We ordered decorate your own pizza for the boys and slowly Lego Man followed by Husband stopped being mardy (grumpy if you’re not from the east midlands). Middle man was immensely proud of his pizza with a crane made out of ham… he didn’t want to eat it. Baby blue who has now started weaning was madly trying to grab pizza and ignoring the pepper and cumber sticks I was trying to give him. As it turns out he is a big fan of Pizza!

That evening when the boys were in bed I help console Husband by sharing a rum and coke with him 😉 He was tempted to sneak off and see a late viewing but really wanted to take his big boy. According to our lonely planet travel guide there was one other cinima in Windhoek. After a quick google on cinema admission polices for PG13 films we decided to give it a go in the morning.

First things first though… we needed to get the suspension bumper sorted, (we had ordered them in advance so they could be delivered to Windhoek in time). Husband returned from the garage with the bumpers 🙂 but they were not fitted 😦 the mechanic had already broken up for Christmas!

We had told the boys that they couldnt go see Star Wars but we would go see something else… they hung back with Husband while I approached the counter.

“Hi, we wish to see star wars movie, Im aware its a PG13 which means a child can see the movie with a parent” … “Thats right but we have a policy that children must be at least 6 madam”… Ok so Middle Man, Baby Blue and Myself will have to go see something else.

Tickets bought I walked back to the boys… I bend down to Lego Boy and tell him you have to be 6 to see starwars here… do you think you can pretend to be 6?”…his eyes light up 🙂 Soon he is zooming around, skipping with glee… I could tell husband was trying very hard not to do the same. The film was about to start so they gradually made their way to the big screen , Lego Boy telling the popcorn server, the security gaurd, the young romantically entangled couple, a man on the toilet and everyone in the theatre, that “I am 6”!

Middle Man enjoyed the peanuts movie whilst I chased the newly crawling Baby Blue around the cinema… we had the place to ourselves. The husband and Lego Boy came out ecstatic having enjoyed the movie. I was then subjected to an afternoon Christmas shopping with 3 boys pretending to be Jedi!

Christmas tree, presents and decorations bought I was starting to feel slightly christmasey, very late for me on the 21st Dec.

A great day doing normal things which we had missed since leaving the UK 🙂 We had spent up and managed to replace most things that were stolen plus we had even found a shop to fix my phone which we would collect in the morning!

Next morning we had a KFC whilst waiting for my phone to be ready 2 hours after it was supposed to be we enjoyed our last bit of civilization before heading out into the  bush and desert again.

  1. Lovely story – vividly told, I can just see you crawling all over that cinema floor in the wake of Baby Blue! – and Leggoman telling everyone in sight that he’s 6!
Thanks – keep it up! xxxxx
