Mummy I had to many cuddles I don’t want any more

So the routine of our new life begins with both the boys starting school! That first morning was exciting, scary and for me a bit sad. We woke up at 5:30 the school bus leaves at 6:30. Both boys were impossible to get moving on the first day but after some chocolate breakfast they got dressed. My heart melted and broke all at the same time. They looked so cute and grown up in their oversized shorts. I still can’t believe Lego Boy is starting full time! You could see they were nervous as they posed for the obligatory first day photos but both walked up to the bus and got on with no fuss.

As it was their first day the teachers asked me to drive to the school and settle them into their class rooms. I was surplus to requirements however as both got stuck in without looking back! On the drive home I must admit I shed a tear. I know people always say “it goes too fast”, but it really does, I can’t believe it, Lego boy has started proper school! It doesn’t seem almost 5 years ago that I was shedding tears over him not feeding/sleeping/etc. and now he’s at school! I managed to pull myself together just in time to return the guard at the finger print scanners smile.

The house seemed empty and very quiet! Baby Blue and I made the most of it by feeding and sleeping. I had to pick Middle Man up just gone noon. I was so excited to hear about his day that I ended up getting there 30 mins early! Plenty of time to deliver Lego Boy’s swim kit which I had forgotten earlier.

Middle Man came bounding out his class room, to my relief he looked happy. When I asked how his day was he looked at me very seriously and said “Mummy I had to many cuddles I don’t want any more”…. not at all what I was expecting but again relief, if that was what he was complaining about then it could not be too bad!

Lego Boy got the bus back at the end of day with the other older children. On return I also asked how his day was, his answer “Mummy can I go play at my friend’s house?”… Relief again all he wanted to do spend more time with people from school 🙂

Over the rest of the week we all settled into the school routine. The early starts became easier for the boys (although Middle Man still takes a bit of dragging from his pit). Middle Mans teacher came to talk to me a few times in the first week worried about him not joining in but I explained that it takes him a while to trust strangers and that he will join in when he is ready. Lego Boy’s supply teacher seemed very pleased with him and how he is settling in.

On evening Lego Boy was upset and thought he was in trouble at school, after discussing this with the teacher it turns out that he was asked to do something quite firmly and took it the wrong way. The teachers do seem lovely but they are strict and formal, far stricter than a reception teacher would probably be back in the UK. As a mum (and not a strict one) this quite hard to stand back and let happen, I know it won’t do them any harm in the long run but will take them some adjusting to in the short term.

A few weeks on and both boys are going to school with no fuss and coming back happy. Both have received School Ambassador awards and house points for good behavior.

Most evenings are spent going for a swim at the onsite pool and playing round friends’ houses. Baby Blue and I are attending a play group and starting to meet other families with little ones. We are also spending time cuddling and sleeping and feeding, which I am really enjoying (most of the time).

Husband’s job seems to be going well. He is busy but far less stressed than he was about work back in the UK. It helps that in the morning as we walk up to his work and the boys school bus we having stunning views over the game reserve.

  1. Just caught up on the last 3. Brilliant! – and so glad the ‘ducks to water’ continue. Read an article about Kafue nat. park the other day – which I guess will be on your list cos looks like it’s only c. 5 hour south. Sounds truly wild! The guy’s canoe got overturned by a bull hippo but “fortunately no crocs nearby to finish the job..” and just 16 lodges in area the size of Wales (why is it always ‘the size of Wales..?!) Soooooo tempting… Loads of love and keep writing! J. xxx
